What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is low bone density leading to a greater risk of a broken bone (fracture).

Just imagine you are flying a plane over a forest full of densely packed trees where you see the tree tops. Compare this to a forest with hardly any trees where you can see the ground below. The latter forest is like osteoporosis, where bone is less dense.

The first question is why is the bone less dense? Causes can include low vitamin D, having gone through menopause or having a genetic risk with family history of hip fractures.

The next question is, what can I do? Calcium is a building block of bone so having calcium in your diet or calcium supplement is recommended. Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium. Weight bearing exercise and good balance is important for having a strong body and preventing injuries. Finally, medications can help reduce your risk of fractures.

I've worked with many patients who have osteoporosis and helped them to manage it. Book an appointment today and I'd be happy to help you as well.
