What are the first diabetes symptoms?

A lot of people wonder how would they be able to tell if they were developing diabetes, what symptoms should they look out for?

Diabetes is a condition where the sugar levels in the blood are high. This true of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. What I find fascinating is that symptoms can vary from person to person. Today a patient told me that they know their sugar is high because they have tingling in their tongue! I had never heard of that before, which just goes to show you should listen to your body and know for you what your diabetes symptoms are. Some people have no symptoms at all.

Often patients think there is something wrong but aren’t sure exactly what it might be. I had a parent tell me they knew their son was not well when he complained he was thirsty, then drank 2 litres of milk and asked for more. A lot of diabetes symptoms are possible but pay attention to the following:

  • Feeling tired

  • Feeling generally unwell

  • Headaches

  • Feeling thirsty

  • Drinking more due to feeling thirsty

  • Urinating more often including during the night

  • Thrush which can cause pain and irritation

  • Infections to the skin, urine, chest or other areas occurring more often than previous

  • Weight loss

If you’re concerned about any of these symptoms, contact your GP because diabetes is diagnosed with a simple blood test. If you have been diagnosed with diabetes I’d be happy for you to book an appointment with a referral from your GP.
